Dry Needling
At Revive medical acupuncture is offered as a standalone treatment and as an addition to an osteopathic treatment session depending on your requirements. It can be an extremely effective intervention to help relieve muscular tension and its associative effects on the body. Medical acupuncture differs from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) acupuncture; which is aimed to help numerous conditions including those not related to the musculoskeletal system.
Medical acupuncture works by stimulating trigger points in muscles. Trigger points are irritable, taut bands of fibres within the muscle that feel tight and uncomfortable to touch, often creating pain in different areas of the body. Trigger points can occur for different reasons such as overuse of the muscle, poor posture, or stress. The needles are placed into this area of muscle once palpated (examined through touch by a skilled practitioner). Once the needle is inserted, a visible twitch of the muscle is often observed. This is not usually painful for the patient, but may provoke an odd sensation. This is the body effectively responding to the needle stimulus, allowing the muscle to contract (shorten) and then relax, helping to remove the trigger point and return the muscle to its normal function.
Other effects of acupuncture include:
- Local Endorphin release (“feel good” chemical and pain reliever)
- Vasodilation (Increasing blood flow to the muscle; helping it receive more nutrients and oxygen)
